With its name derived from the Greek word apatein, which means “to deceive”; apatite is a group of phosphate minerals whose primary uses are found in the fertilization of crops. The primary minerals that are a part of this group are fluorapatite, chlorapatite, hydroxyapatite; with the extended group being pyromorphite, mimetite, and vanadinite. The first appreciated specimen was originally thought to be blue tourmaline until further inspection was completed and it was found the stone was not a match due to it being a much softer mineral. This is where its name comes from, the gem-quality pieces look like other minerals such as beryl or tourmaline, but they are not in the same family.

Apatite is the primary source for the phosphate mineral, which plants require and all animal bones and teeth are composed of. Another fun fact about apatite is that moon rocks collected during the Apollo program contained trace amounts of apatite. Apatite can be found in several colors ranging from yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, and brown. 

Where does that leave us in our understanding of how blue apatite works with energy? This mineral has a very unique energy. While most blue stones inspire us to breathe and be still, this one almost calls us to action. As though it says “It’s time to sink or swim.” It inspires that feeling that we must move, that it is time to act. Be it just a change in perspective, or actually applying physical action, this crystal says “Now is the time.” Much like being thrown into a lake of water, we will either sink or swim to shore – either way our focus will be on the fact that we are in the water. There is no avoiding it, we must decide to do something because we can’t simply tread water forever, right? This idea is comparable to real life in that if we have something we must address, this crystal will throw us into it and we must finally make a decision. Although it doesn’t leave us without assistance. 

This crystal calls us to look deeper. It invites us to look past the surface and find what lies beneath. We must find the “bones”, or the energy that supports what we see at first glance. The truth can always be found, and this crystal facilitates that connection to the inspired self that can both be still and push through blockages at the same time. To find the truth we often have to pause our thoughts, our perception, and move it all aside so we can find our way to a clearer understanding. This stone resonates well with the rise and fall of the tides. The cyclic nature of the water on our planet is very similar to how blue apatite promotes growth, healing, and progress. By bringing awareness to all influencing energy, then allowing it to recede as we process the information and find a way to integrate the “truth” into our own way of being this crystal allows one to perceive truths other than their own and find a way to a more unified or helpful way of thinking.
